Gaza
Azeez Tharuvana

Brothers and sisters of Gaza,
forgive us—
we stand here,
draped in the shame of our own humanity.
Our hands are empty,
our voices hollow.

Our anger burns, but not at you—
it festers for the Arab thrones
that recline on silk while you
chew dust and drink your tears.

We watch famine eat your children
while their banquet tables
groan under gold.
We watch the sky rain fire on you
and they do not lift a single trembling finger.

Do not ask us to pray anymore.
The God we were told to call upon
has been buried in Gaza,
under rubble, under silence, under the graves of your babies.

We are left with only
the sound of your bones breaking
and the taste of our own cowardice.
